Incorporating Contracted Auxiliaries in English a Collection of Papers on Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar

چکیده
Spencer (1991) and Sadler (1997) argue that there are two diierent phenomena that have been grouped together as`contracted auxiliaries'. On the one hand are the syllabic reduced auxiliaries that are unselective in what they attach to. On the other hand, there are nonsyllabic reduced auxiliaries that exhibit lexical idiosyncrasy, stem allomorphy, and word-internal phonological processes. Sadler (1997:1{2) illustrates the two classes with data like those in (1){(2): 1 Spencer and Sadler both propose to treat the syllabic reduced auxiliaries (1) as clitics. Their proposal regarding the nonsyllabic reduced auxiliaries (2), on the other hand, is to treat them as aaxes attached to the prior pronominal. Sadler also claims that the syllabic forms are not 1 Judgments of ungrammaticality reported in this paper are based on intuitions about`normal' rate speech. In fast speech, some of the examples we starred may well occur. However, we believe that the intuitive contrasts still stand, if only in slower speech, and therefore must be accounted for.

Advances in Deep Parsing of Scholarly Paper Content
We report on advances in deep linguistic parsing of the full textual content of 8200 papers from the ACL Anthology, a collection of electronically available scientific papers in the fields of Computational Linguistics and Language Technology. We describe how – by incorporating new techniques – we increase both speed and robustness of deep analysis, specifically on long sentences where deep pars...
متن کاملDutch Cross Serial Dependencies in HPSG
We present an analysis of Dutch cross serial dependencies in Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar ((P&S(1994)]). We start out from the assumption that causative and perceptual verbs, like auxiliaries, can lexically`raise' the arguments of the non-nite verbs they govern to their own list of arguments through \argument composition" ((H&N(1989)]).
متن کاملNegation, VP Ellipsis, and VP Fronting in English : A Construction-HPSG Analysis
It is well-known that the English auxiliaries are sensitive to the so called NICE (Negation, Inversion, Contraction, and Ellipsis) phenomena. Based on these empirical properties of auxiliaries, this paper argues for the existence of the construction aux-headph(rase) whose subtypes include negation-ph, inversion-ph, ellipsis-ph, vp-filler-ph, and the like. Each of this subtype has its own constr...
متن کاملThe UOT system: improve string-to-tree translation using head-driven phrase structure grammar and predicate-argument structures
We present the UOT Machine Translation System that was used in the IWSLT-09 evaluation campaign. This year, we participated in the BTEC track for Chinese-to-English translation. Our system is based on a string-to-tree framework. To integrate deep syntactic information, we propose the use of parse trees and semantic dependencies on English sentences described respectively by Head-driven Phrase S...
متن کاملCorpus-Oriented Grammar Development for Acquiring a Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar from the Penn Treebank
This paper describes a method of semi-automatically acquiring an English HPSG grammar from the Penn Treebank. First, heuristic rules are employed to annotate the treebank with partially-specified derivation trees. Lexical entries are automatically extracted from the annotated corpus by inversely applying schemata to partially-specified derivation trees.
